Navigating the Central Administration Home Page (part 1) - Central Administration Site Actions Menu

The Central Administration home page is a SharePoint Foundation 2010 site; it has its own site settings and WSS “look and feel.” You can add functionality to the page if you want, or you can even customize the page. Central Administration has four items located above the Central Administration title, which is also a hyperlink that will allow you to return to this main page from within the Central Administration site at any time. The following four actions, located on the upper left side of the screen shown in Figure 1, are available to you for navigation or customization of the Central Administration home page.

1. Central Administration Site Actions Menu

Because the Central Administration is a SharePoint site, the Site Actions list, shown in Figure 2, is available. This option allows you to perform the same actions to your Central Administration site as you would any other SharePoint 2010 site.

This Site Action menu can be used to perform the following tasks for the Central Administration site.

  • Edit Page Modify the Central Administration home page Web Parts.

  • New Document Library Create a new document library to store shared documents.

  • New Site Create a subsite within Central Administration.

  • More Options Create all other SharePoint components, including pages and lists.

  • View All Site Content View all lists and libraries within the Central Administration site.

  • Edit Site In SharePoint Designer Make modifications to the Central Administration home page using SharePoint 2010 Designer.

  • Site Permissions Manage permissions of the Central Administration site.

  • Site Settings Access and manage all settings for the Central Administration site.

You will find similar options on other sites throughout SharePoint when you click Site Actions.
